MTSS: Learn from Multiple Domain Teachers and Become a Multi-domain Dialogue Expert

How to build a high-quality multi-domain dialogue system is a challenging work due to its complicated and entangled dialogue state space among each domain, which seriously limits the quality of dialogue policy, and further affects the generated response. In this paper, we propose a novel method to acquire a satisfying policy and subtly circumvent the knotty dialogue state representation problem in the multi-domain setting. Inspired by real school teaching scenarios, our method is composed of multiple domain-specific teachers and a universal student. Each individual teacher only focuses on one specific domain and learns its corresponding domain knowledge and dialogue policy based on a precisely extracted single domain dialogue state representation. Then, these domain-specific teachers impart their domain knowledge and policies to a universal student model and collectively make this student model a multi-domain dialogue expert. Experiment results show that our method reaches competitive results with SOTAs in both multi-domain and single domain setting.
Hierarchical Context Enhanced Multi-Domain Dialogue System for Multi-domain Task Completion

Task 1 of the DSTC8-track1 challenge aims to develop an end-to-end multi-domain dialogue system to accomplish complex users' goals under tourist information desk settings. This paper describes our submitted solution, Hierarchical Context Enhanced Dialogue System (HCEDS), for this task. The main motivation of our system is to comprehensively explore the potential of hierarchical context for sufficiently understanding complex dialogues. More specifically, we apply BERT to capture token-level information and employ the attention mechanism to capture sentence-level information. The results listed in the leaderboard show that our system achieves first place in automatic evaluation and the second place in human evaluation.
Deep Reinforcement Learning for Multi-Domain Dialogue Systems

Standard deep reinforcement learning methods such as Deep Q-Networks (DQN) for multiple tasks (domains) face scalability problems. We propose a method for multi-domain dialogue policy learning---termed NDQN, and apply it to an information-seeking spoken dialogue system in the domains of restaurants and hotels. Experimental results comparing DQN (baseline) versus NDQN (proposed) using simulations report that our proposed method exhibits better scalability and is promising for optimising the behaviour of multi-domain dialogue systems.
